Safe drinking water for Orbili, District, Manyara Region

The village of Orbili, located in the Simanjiro District of Tanzania’s Manyara Region, is one of many remote rural communities without reliable access to safe drinking water. Today, around 1,500 residents depend on contaminated surface water sources and often have to travel several kilometres to collect water for their families. Waterborne diseases such as diarrhoea, typhoid and cholera are common and pose a serious threat to public health.

Through this project, the waterkiosk foundation will establish a sustainable and long-term drinking water supply system for the entire community. At the heart of the system is a riverbank filtration well that naturally purifies the water. The water is then pumped using solar energy, disinfected and distributed through a pipeline network to public water points within the village.
A key element of the project is the active involvement of the local community. Villagers contribute labour during construction and later take responsibility for operating and maintaining the system. A simple prepaid water system generates revenue for maintenance and repairs, ensuring the long-term sustainability of the infrastructure.
Beyond improving health, the project will significantly reduce the time women and children spend collecting water each day. It will also create new opportunities for education, economic development and a better quality of life. In a second phase, the water network is planned to be extended to the local primary school, providing approximately 450 students with access to safe drinking water.
